Legal Question in Consumer Law in California
What is the responsibility of a lawyer to discuss fees prior to billing? I have shared emails with an attorney since Sept 2011 and was never told anything about fees or asked to sign a contract. I recently got a bill from this attorney for $427.

An attorney should discuss billing with the client prior to doing the work. If the fees are expected to be over $1,000, the fee agreement must be in writing.
