Legal Question in Consumer Law in California
Sale of Alcohol
I'm 25 years old and a sergeant in the US Army. I went to a WinCo grocery store in northern california to purchase food and alcohol. I had three individuals, who had been shopping with me, and two of them were under 21. I had no intention to furnish the alcohol to these individuals but was buying it for myself. Nevertheless, the clerk told me that she not only wouldn't sell the alcohol to me without seeing their identification, but that if I had intended to come with said individuals to the store, that they would have had to sit out in the car. I was in the store for almost two hours. I was not going to make my friends sit in the car for almost two hours. I feel the clerk had been unreasonable. Therefore, I am curious, do I have a bona fide complaint or was I in violation of a code or law by trying to purchase alcohol in a grocery establishment while accompanied by minors?

Re: Sale of Alcohol
The clerk is rightfully afraid that you and your cohorts could be undercover agents for the state Alcoholic Beverage Control board and she could lose her job and/or get arrested. Maybe you could send your friends outside right before you get in the checkout line.
