Searching backpacks in a retail store
My nephew walked into a retail store, walked around, went to the restroom and on his way out picked out a ball to purchase, paid for it and walked out. Outside the store the manager asked if he can search his backpack; when didn't find anything he asked him to empty his pockets. The manager did all this at the register. Is this search legal?

If your nephew consented, then it was legal. Typically, people will store their bags at the front counter so suspicion of shoplifting can be avoided.
