Legal Question in Consumer Law in California
Is there such a thing as a ''check fee''?
I wanted to purchase a $10K vehicle at a small corner dealer and was prepared to pay $3K in cash, $5K with a check, and 2K on a credit card. The dealer said that there will be a credit card fee of 1.5% (which I have seen before and is OK), but he also wanted to charge a 3% ''check fee'' for the $5K. I have never heard of such a creature and was wondering if this is legal, given a check is simply your authorization to the bank to release a sepcific amount of funds to a given entity? I thought the extra $150 was a deal-breaker and I ended up not buying the car.

There's no such thing as a check fee. They made it up in order to rip you off.
