Legal Question in Consumer Law in California

Is it unlawful (criminal) to obtain someone's personal information, specifically a social security number, by false pretenses? To my knowledge it hasn't been used. But the person claimed to be a contactor with a big company and was looking to hire office help. She went through the usual pre-employment stuff and took my SSN. Found out later she was a fraud.
