Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

12 year old credit card debt

Dear Sir/Madam,

12 years ago I charged nine hundred dollars on a jewlery credit card account. I stopped making payments due to loss of income and moved several times and stopped getting account statements over 10 years ago. Then yesterday out of the blue, I received a letter from a company who bought the account and is now trying to collect. Is there a statute of limitations for this? Do I have to pay?

Thank you.

Re: 12 year old credit card debt

Normally the statute of limitations is 4 years on a written agreement and 2 years on an oral agreement. A judgment is valid 10 years, but may be renewed for another 10 years. Please fax your letter to 714 363 0229 with your phone number and I can advise you if the statute of limiations has run.
