You should take the papers to a local attorney to review them determine if they are legitimate. Before a private party can initiate a wage garnishment, they must sue you and get a judgment. So it may very well be legal of the attorney followed the proper procedures.
If you have a judgment against and this is a valid wage garnishment, ask the attorney about filing a claim of exemption to reduce or eliminate the garnishment. You should also ask if you have legal grounds to vacate the judgment and you should also consider seeing a bankruptcy attorney.
