abandoned? horses

Since 9/07 I have rented a pasture to a man for his 2 horses. When he ran out of food for them I bought the food and til Dec he repaid me. In Dec he gave me a check that bounced and since 1/08 I have not been able to get in touch with him. I call the 3 #'s he gave me but no answer and at his address his truck is there but no lights or people. His wife's car is not there. He lives about 30 miles from me. I sent him a registered letter today asking what he wants me to do. I cannot afford the feed for these 2 horses and I've told him that in phone messages several times. I have even left a phone message that if anyone in the house gets it please let me know what is happening. No calls back. What can I legally do? He also left riding gear for 1 horse here. As of this date he owes me $612.00.

There is an old procedure to lien the boarded animals which I haven't used in years. It is similar to a garage man's lien when you don't pay for repairs to your car.

You should see an attorney about taking the steps necessary to assert your claim as soon as possible, since your expenses may soon exceed the value of the horse.

Regarding the other personal property, you need to do an abandoned property notice. That notice should also come from an attorney for maximum effect.
