Are adult children legally responsible for medical bills incured by parents, af

Are adult children legally responsible for medical bills incured by parents? My parents died 2 years ago. They were very responsible and always paid their bills. Before their death they became incapable of writing their own checks and I took over the job of writing checks for them. They put my name on their checking account and their bills came to my house where they lived a short time. To make it clear, I never signed any papers stating that I would be financially responsible for any medical debts. After they died a few bills continued to come, mostly co-pays for meds and such. Out of the goodness of my hear, I went ahead and paid them. Then I started to receive big bills. The ambulance co. wanted $600. because Blue Cross refused to pay. I argued with them on the phone and then agreed to pay half. I started ignoring and throwing out more bills. I am now still getting bills from the ambulance co. threating to ruin my credit if I don't pay. How can I get them to stop? Is not this illegal harassment?
