Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Hi, i'm seeking advise to forward onto a co-worker of mine. Situation is this: a couple lives together, buys a car puts his name on contract, she puts the down payment and makes all the payments. They break up, he lets her keep the car as long as she makes the payments. She has never missed a payment. Now he, for whatever reason, calls the finance company and tells them to reposses the car. Tow truck comes to her work and took the car. Can she sue ex for monies she's already put towards the car??? Does she have any recourse at all??? Please advise, thank you.
