Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

How far can a Bill Collection Agency Go?

I had a bill collection agency call my home while I was at work. The caller pressured my 11 year old to give him my number at work. He called my work and inquired at our switchboard all about me and my position. They referrred him to my Director. While we were in a meeting, expecting an important call, my Director answered the phone. I, and a fellow associate could hear the caller ask about me, trying to verify me employment. My Director is looking at me in disbelief thinking I am applying for another job. The caller asked about my salary and my Director responded with ''I can only verify what she has told you, has she given you permission to contact her employer?'' The caller responded with ''She has been less that cooperative with us!'' With that my Director then offered him my voice mail. My question is: Is this legal to tarnish my reputation with my employer? This was extremely embarrassing as I had to assure my boss that I am not out looking for another job.

Re: How far can a Bill Collection Agency Go?

sounds like they violated a number of regulations regarding collections. You may have a cause of action against the agency.
