Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

i bought a car from drivetime in Feb of 2008. i have been recently laidoff and am currently receiving unemployment. I am currently making payments on time of $191.36 bi-weekly but i am behind $397. my question is can drivetime contact my friends and neighbors if i did not give them the number as ref. I have an elderly woman living across the street from me and they have been calling her on a daily basis and told her i gave her contact info as a ref. that is not the truth because when i bought the car i was not living here. i dont know her last name or phone number so they had to have searched out this info. is there anything i can do to stop them from harassing people and myself as well. any advice will be greatly appreciated.

No they can't do things like that as it is against the law under the Federal and State Fair Debt Collection Practices Acts.

You should contact a collection defense attorney in your area immediately because you may able to sue them for this conduct.

Good luck and hope this helps.
