Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

When we bought a new car, our neighbor asked if he could buy our old junker. We agreed on a price of $500.00 and signed the car over to him based on his verbal promise to pay us $100.00 a month for the next five months. That was in September of 2010 and we have yet to see a penny. He claims to have fallen on hard times but we see him living large every day. Since I got nothing in writing, do I have any legal options to force him to pay?
