Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California
My boyfriend and I are working on a sticky situation regarding a previous lease he was on with his x-girlfriend and two other girls. When my boyfriend and his x broke up they moved out of the apartment and went separate ways. When they moved out they attempted to have the other girls sign that they were moving out but they refused to. This has since been over a year and he is now being contacted by a collection agency. The two other girls stayed in the apartment till the end of the lease which was July 2010. They neglected to pay the final rent and racked up a large amount in unpaid utilities. There is now a bill due of over $2500 that they are putting under all of the names from the lease. My boyfriend has been the only one responding to the collector and just made his first payment of $50 to show that he wants to get this fixed. The collection agency said the only way to get his name out of it is to pay $1000. We are looking at ways to come up with that but we need to know what else is possible. The collector said they are looking at going to court now and that it will affect credit of all people. We need to know what else we could do to clear this up. We (he) want to do whatever we can to fix it but also not paying more then we absolutely need to.

Since your boyfriend is still on the lease he is liable for the entire amount. But so are the other girls. Your only hope is to sue the other girls in small claaims court for contribution.
