Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Calls all hours, days

My husband and myself are not working due to illness. We owed a credit card company $586.00 on a credit card with $600 credit limit. We explained that we were on SSI and wanted to pay something as soon as we could. We ask them to close the account, so we would not incur late fees and over the limit fees. They did not do that; instead each month they added late fees, over the limit fees, and finace charges to where now they say we owe $1,255. They are calling us at all hours, and everyday, sometimes twice a day threatening to attach our SSI. We wrote them and asked them not to call anymore, and that we felt we owed $586. not $1,255. They still call us everyday, evening after 9pm, early in the morning. I reminded them I had sent a letter requesting them not to call anymore. The guy told me he would call whenever he wanted, and as often as he wanted. What can I do?

It sounds as if they are in violation of both California and Federal Laws regarding collection of debt. You could very likely have a case against them.
