Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California
What canI do if I am damaged by a credit reporting agency's negligence in mainta
In March and April of 2001, one of the three major credit reporting agencies furnished reports on my credit history and personal information to several property management companies. The reports contained extensive information (Accounts, prior addresses, drivers' license no.'s, etc.) which did not pertain to me. As a result, I was denied housing three times, as well as defamed and humiliated. Further, the enormous deposit I had to come up with to rent a home forced me to neglect other accounts, negatively affecting my personal finances(we may or may not recover). No other agency reported any of the erronious information, nor did the agency in question as recently as 9/00 (much of the ''bad'' information is dated prior to this date). What recourse is available to me to collect damages? What, exactly are the issues on which I should focus? If this is not the appropriate area of law, what is? Can anyone help?

You may be able to sue the credit reporting agency to recover your damages, but it depends on what steps you took after learning about the false information. You should probably invest the time to discuss this with an attorney in your area, and provide that attorney with all documents you might have relating to this matter.
You may also want to file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. You can obtain more information at the FTC's website at www.ftc.gov.
