Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Car debt affecting my credit

I signed a car loan for my mother two years ago. I thought I was the co-signer but as of three weeks ago I found out I was the buyer. I received a copy of the contract where I signed each line as the buyer. My mother has the car and was making payments until she started to fall behind. Now the account is in collections and my credit score is taking a big hit. What can I do?

Repossess the car and sell it, or make the monthly payments.
