Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California
Car registered under my name but used by other.
Dear Sir or Madam,
I will try to be as clear, honest, and upfront as possible. Please let me know if you can help me; and perhaps inform me as what my legal options are.
My friend did not have a license and could not register a car. Being a friend; I registered the car under my name. He had some mechanical problem on the freeway and pulled over. A policeman came by and asked my friend for his drivers license and other information. Long story short, the policeman took the car.
The tow company sent me a letter, saying they were going to sell the car. I did not response or object and basically forgot about the topic; considering the case closed.
I just received a collection letter saying I owe about 1700.00 dollars in regards to my account with the towing company. I do not fully understand what has and is happening. I do not know my options. Can you help me?
Thankyou.

Since he is your "friend," just call him up and ask him to pay the $1700 towing and storage fees you owe. You are lucky he didn't get in an accident - you could have owed an unlimited amount of money. Never entrust an automobile to an unlicensed person.
