Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California
Child Support Collections
A friend owes child support, but has not paid it (I don't know why). He has received a phone call from a child support investigations company stating that they have power of attorney on behalf of someone ( he assumes his ex-wife) and that he needs to pay his debt (@ $15k). They informed him that they are not involved with the court systems - they are a child support collection company. They state that if he does not at least try to pay a portion of it that they can place a lien against his house, etc.
Can a company really do that? Does he have any legal rights?
Thank you.
