Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

How do I collect an out of state debt?

I ordered baseball cards thru a catelog in Cal and mailed $700 ck with order. Never rec'd cards. Seller has since skipped town. I am in New York.

Do I have to appear in small claims court, or can all be done without me? If I have to be there, do I also sue for all my travel expenses?? Need info & advice please. I have been in contact with dealer but he doesn't keep promises to send me pmnts. Still owes me $500. Is this a sufficient amount of money to file a claim on? Travel, if necessary, would add at least $1,000 - $1,500.

You can sue in CA small claims court if the claim is $5,000 or less. you can file by mail but must be here for trial and cannot recover travel expenses
