Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Collection agency

A fitness club where I cancelled my membership sent a collection company to collect an amount from a period after I cancelled (i.e. I cancelled but they contend that I owe them for a period beyond the cancel date). I cancelled in person but the club contends it has no records of that cancellation. Prior to my receipt of the collection notice, I received no notice from the fitness club that I owed them money (i.e. they said nothing so I assumed my cancellation was ok). What can I do to get the collectors off my back?

Re: Collection agency

Since you cancelled in person, I presume you would have gotten something in writing signed by a representative of the club. Send them a copy. If you relied on the oral representations of someone at the club, you are probably out of luck. Read your contract, I bet it says it can only be cancelled or modified in writing.
