Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

collection headache

I have a bill from a local hospital that went into collections 6 years ago. I read where you could pay the organization you owe directly and not the collection agency. So after I wrote to the collection agency to contact me by mail only and after settling on 10 dollars a month payment I started to pay the hospital the 10 dollars a month and they have always cashed the checks. The original bill is around 1500 dollars. Well for the past 4 years I have paid the hospital 10 dollars a month (they have cashed all the checks) and each month I get a bill from the collection agency saying my bill is late. I write back I have paid the hospital. Then every 6 months or so I get a notice that I am neglecting my bill and get a threat of further action being taken. I write back that I have been paing the hsopital faithfully for over 4 years the 10 dollars that was agreeg on well now I got a notice that the payment is 25 dollars a month. Can the agency take me to court. What about all my payment to the hospital. We have beeen playing this game for over 4 years now. Should I continue to pay the hospital or start paing the agency?.

Re: collection headache

Make sure you get credit for the amounts you have paid to the hospital from the collection agency and deal with them-collection agency- directly for the duration. Feel free to contact me with any further questions-Martin
