Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

I am in collections for college claases never taken

I signed up to take several courses at Mt.Sierra college back in October 2001 (signed a contract). 2nd day of class the instructor quit. I turned in my cancellation form within the time-frame required.

I received money from the government under the G.I. bill, but have contacted them to pay them back for courses I did not take.

A collection agency contacted me to collect $2,450.00 which I explained I did not owe.

I explained to the school the situation and faxed them the documentation they required. They still feel that I owe them these fees according to their records. I then contacted the Better Business Bureau in which the school offered to settle for $2000.00. I rejected the amount and have not heard from them for 2 months now. my credit report has not shown a delinquency as of today. What action can I take to settle this once and for all. Should I take it to small claims court?

Thank you in advance.

Re: I am in collections for college claases never taken

Somehow, they feel as if they are entitled to the money. If you have any money from the G.I. Bill that was not used toward school and which you did not pay back, then it would seem that you do owe them. If you took the money but didn't take the class, you should be paying them back. If that is the case, get back in contact with them and settle the matter. Eventually, it will show up on your credit. And if it hasn't yet, perhaps you can negotiate with them that it doesn't appear if you pay them right away, etc.

Get a solution that doesn't involve court if at all possible.
