Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Not sure if Collections Law was the right category for this.

In October of 2008 I started working as an independent contractor for a start-up software company. During the time I worked there from October 2008 to early 2010 the company had trouble getting inverters. Because of the funding problems they had trouble paying me as well as many others. I, along with a few others, tried to stay optometric and the 2 owners told us "next week" or "next month" on many occasions. We did get paid some money every few months when they got small amounts. In mid April I left and got a new job and a week later I received an e-mail saying that the business was shutting down. From very early on they told us they would also add 10% to all checks that were late(which was all of them). They still currently owe me $15,645 and $19,619 including the 10%. My question is what steps can I take to get the money that is owed to me?

You should contact the local office of the California State Economic Development Department (EDD) and file a complaint for unpaid wages. If the company is going out of business, it may not be possible to recover unpaid wages, but EDD is a free resource to start with.
