Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Sent to collections, but don't owe!!

I was sent to collections by the apartment complex I used to live in. We moved out 1 year and 10 months ago. I just received a collection notice for $60 which was the agreed upon amount between myself and the apartment complex for some cleaning. We paid them by check. I have since ordered a copy of the check to prove to them that we have paid it. Do I have any recourse against the apartment complex for sending us to collections without any notice? The first I heard that we supposedly owed them money was the collection letter. They had all of our current contact information as they contacted us after we moved out. I would think they would have to contact us before we where sent to collections.

Re: Sent to collections, but don't owe!!

You're talking about sixty dollars, so "recourse" should not be your focus. It should be just getting this cleared up so you can move on. Get the cancelled check, get it to collections, make sure it hasn't negatively affected your credit(if it has, tell them to fix it and they will be obligated to do so), and move on. That's not legal advice. That's common sense.
