Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

collector

my girlfriend had a bill collector call her place of employment stating that he had information from the San Bernardino DA's office and it was a legal issue. Her receptionist paniced and call the top boss. Then my girlfriend received a call from her boss telling her to take care of it. The next day my girlfriend called the DA's office and they have nothing filed under her name. What if anything can be done?

Re: collector

It is a violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act to threaten criminal prosecution for a debt owed. I see this as a threat. When and if your girlfriend calls the bill collector, get as much identifying information as possible, and then bring the information to a lawyer who specializes in suing collection agencies for such violations.
