Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

I cosigned for my nephew's apartment, he got evicted. i just received a debt collection notice for $7,000.00. I was never contacted by anyone about this and now i'm in collections. He is filing for bankruptcy and says this debt will be covered. Am I still going to be on the hook for the $7,000.00

While your nephew may be the primary debtor, you agreed to pay any unpaid rent if your nephew failed to do so. His bankruptcy will only impact his duty to pay whatever is owed. You are still on the hook for this debt, although I suspect that the actual balance of the unpaid rate might be lower than $7000. You might try negotiating with the landlord on this.
