Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Credit Card Liability

My wife applied for a obtained several credit cards for various stores without my knowledge before Christmas of 1998. She charged a substantial amount on these cards (I believe around $4,000 minimum). I was in no way involved in her getting these cards (I only found out about them after the fact). My question is... Am I liable for her debts, even though I had nothing to do with them?

Re: Credit Card Liability

Well, technically, you could be held liable to the extent that she used the credit to support the household because legally that would be considered a community obligation. However, credit card companies are run by computers, not people, so if your name is not on the account the chances are they will never get around to going after you.
