Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Credit/collections

I had a horrible divorce and am trying to go back and clean up my credit. In doing so I have been working with collection agencies. One of them referred my case to an ''attorney.'' They served me papers to my mothers home when I was out of town and stated I had been served. Is that legal? Also the firm will not work with me on the wording of the court documents. I had a lawyer friend look over the documents and he advised me that I was signing papers that basically waived my rights. I want to repay the debt but do not want to sign something that is not in my best intrest. I crossed out sections of the paperwork and sent them back. They said the only thing they would negotiate was the interest rate that they would have new documents prepared and fax them to me. I received paperwork at my mothers home approximately 3 weeks later stating I had 15 days to respond prior to their taking this to court. I feel like I am being forced to sign these documents and need to know my rights as a consumer. I even tried to contact the collection agency that referred the acct. After leaving several messages I finally called back and demanded to speak to a mgr. He stated he was the mgr and he chooses not to work with me. I need some advise
