Can a creditor ask for a bank statment - sure they can ask. Just like they can ask for a milion dollars. You do not have to give it to them.
The real question is what proof do you have that the payment was made? Do you have a copy of a cancelled check? If so give it to them (a copy of course not your original). Do you have a receipt from your bank showing that the payment was transmitted? Then give it to them. The goal is to prove that the payment was made. You do not have to give them information about your other finances.
Good luck,
