Is there a date limit on collecting debts in California?

If there's a written agreement underlying the debt, you have four years from the date of the last payment (or if none, from when the agreement was breached) to file a lawsuit. If you have an oral agreement or they used your money for their own benefit, the statute of limitation for filing suit is two years.
Once there is a judgment, it's good for ten years, and may be renewed for another ten.
