Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

I have an old debt that was charged off in Calfornia in 2008 I got a notice to pay in 2010 and I made a payment and it was refused. Did the payment even though it was refused start the statute of limitations over in 2010 or does it revert back to the 2008?
