Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

debt collection on tuition

I recently recived a letter from a debt collection agency saying that my MBA school, where I graduated in August 2000, claims I owe them $2,850. Without ever hearing or receiving anything directly from the school, I am guessing my previous empolyer, who had agreed to pay all my MBA tuition, may have canceled the last check payble to the school for the last semester. Before every semester began, I would get signature and approval from my manager of haing the company pay the tuition. It was no different for the last semester. However, the last semester started in June 2000 and I left the company in July 2000. I thought the company has already paid and the check was cashed, but it may not be ture. In addition, I lost the singed paper that shows my manager's approval of payment for the last semester. My question is Should I write or contact the debt collection agency and am I responsible fore the debt?

Re: debt collection on tuition

Did the school agree that your employer would be the sole party obligated for paying your tuition?
