Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

debt collection

I have a collection from about 6

years ago from an owner of an

apartment that I used to live in with

my mom. They want about $3600

and I don't even know why. Is there

a way that I can dispute it and get

them to stop harassing me? They

have now threatened to garnish my

wages, take property, ect. They

should be going after my mom since

she was the one responsible for

paying rent. She didn't even tell me

that we were getting evicted until

the night before we had to move out.

I refuse to pay it.

Re: debt collection

It sounds like there was a judgment against someone in connection with the eviction.

You might check with the court to see if you were a named defendant. (If you were not on the rental agreement, then you shouldn't owe any money, anyway.)

Go to the website or courthouse of the court in the district in which the property is located, look up your name, and see if there is a judgment against you. If so, get a copy and talk to a lawyer about what to do next. If not, then tell them never to call you again.
