Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Debt responsibility after death of spouse

My spouse died a year ago, and we lived in California at the time. He left no insurance or income. At the time of his death, he had 2 credit cards in his own name. I was not an authorized user. I notified the companies of his death. Now they are threatening me with legal action if I don't pay, saying that I am responsible because California is a community property state. I cannot afford to pay his bills, I can barely pay my own. What responsibility do I have?

I agree with Mr. Koury's response, but I would go a step further and sue them for their fraudulent representations that they could collect this from you. If you are in Texas, and want my assistance in this matter, contact me by e-mail.
