Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Debts after a Death

My sister just passed away. She virtually had nothing, but a few debts (no car, no real property) and she was on SSI only. She did borrow (check to cash) every month and had a few debts from mail-order companies. She has 3 kids (1 she lived with and the other 2 are in different states). Her debts probably don't even add up to $500. But are these kids (all adults) responsible for her debts in California? Can they just send a certified copy of her death certificate to her creditors and leave it at that? They are worried, as none of them have any money. Please let me know. Thank You

Re: Debts after a Death

As a courtesy, you can send these creditors a copy of the death certificate. The amounts of debt are so small, it will not be in the creditors financial interest to spend money to try to collect such minimal amounts. In truth, you should have nothing to worry about. Condolences, sincerely.
