Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Deceased parent credit card debt

My mom passed away May 2007. She had no estate or will, lived in Section 8 housing and had used furnishings. We just learned she had a credit card debt of about $6800!! What do I do with letters from creditor demanding payment from me? I did not co-sign with her, she had no money and that is probably why she ran up credit card debt for her medicine! Help!!?

Re: Deceased parent credit card debt

Send them letters telling them that Mom passed away recently and left no assets. Include a copy of the death certificate. Tell them not to bother you again since you're not responsible for her debt (unless you're also jointly responsible for her credit cards).
