Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Help with Elder Care Financial Burden

I have been caring for my elderly Grandfather who is 92 and living alone. He broke his hip last year and I was the only family member who would provide for his after care when he was released from the hospital at a cost of $2000.00 a month. He also owns his own business, which has been bankrupt for the past 10 years, but we have been trying to get it going again. I have helped with the costs of shipping the manufacturing equipment from a plant, and with storage of the same equipment for the past 2 years at a cost of over $6000.00. I recently moved out of California and can no longer help my Grandfather with weekly needs of cleaning and laundry, so I have hired a care person to come in once a week to help out. All of this has cost me incredible amounts of money, and now I am looking at bankruptcy because I can no longer pay my credit card bills (where all of these expenses ended up). I am in debt over $40,000 in credit cards, most of which is due to helping my Grandfather. Is there some Elder Care law or some credit law or something to help me get out from under this debt without having to go the bankruptcy route? Is there some Federal or State funded program that would re-imberse me for all the care expenses?

Re: Help with Elder Care Financial Burden

I am sorry to say that I do not know of anything of the sort of which you speak. Your story is a compelling argument for systemic medical reform. Your best option may be to go bankrupt before reorms are passed by congress. You can hire an attorney to negotiate some of the debts you are ultimately liable for them.

Good luck to you-Martin
