Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

emergency room hospital bill..

I was treated at the emergency dept and did not have insurance. My bill is now approx $1700.00. I am unemployed and can only make small payments. The hospital(tri-city) is telling me that if i make payments(by mail) that I have to pay the full amount in 3 payments. Do I have to pay according to their terms? Can I make small($20) monthly payments and avoid further action from the hospital?I also believe that an incorrect action from the doctor led to me losing my job in the first place. What should I do?

They should work with you. You may also want to see if you qualify for Medi-Cal, but technically the bill is due and payable in full when services are provided. Pay what you can and that may help.
