Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

I'm currently enlisting the help of an attorney to dispute some hospital bills I've accrued with my insurance company. Meanwhile, however, I'm worried that the outstanding debt (about $15,000) will make it impossible to find an apartment and get an auto loan, both things I need to be able to get a job. Is there any way to avoid bad credit reports and at least get approved for a place to live during this in-between period?
