Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Ex-boyfriend owes money

I consolidated my boyfriends debt onto my credit card to help him so we could move in together. We are no longer together, and he is saying that he doesn't owe me anything. This was not a gift and he knew that he was going to be expected to pay it. We lived together in WA state, and he now moved to CA. Is there anything legally that I can do to get him to pay?

Re: Ex-boyfriend owes money

Thank you for your inquiry.

You basically have a contract case. In my opinion, the laws of Washington, where the agreement to repay would have been created, is where the contract was created, although where the contract was "breached", i.e., he agreed not to repay, could have been either Washington or California.

I hope that this information helps, but if you have further questions you need answered, want more information, or feel that you need legal representation, please feel free to email me directly at [email protected]. Im happy to help in any way that I can.

It sounds like you had an oral contract with him and he breached it. The contract was entered into in WA and he breached it in WA. Sue him there. You can do it yourself in small claims court. You can only win $2,500 in small claims court in Washington. Here's a site that should be helpful:

Best of luck,
