Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California
Extending judgement 10 more yrs
We wanted to pay our $5k judgement long ago however, we did not know where winner was, had no demands or new address, phone, etc. Suddenly he shows up at 10 years to extend judgement 10 more years which now has increased to $13k+ and we feel there should be some law against hiding from payments in order to collect unfair interest.

Re: Extending judgement 10 more yrs
A judgment creditor is entitled to renew their judgment every 10 years on an outstanding award. However, if the judgment creditor at issue intentionally, willfully and knowingly hid from you to avoid your satisfaction of the judgment, then you may have grounds for mitigation of the amount being claimed now due to accrued interest. Your best bet may be to try to offer the judgment creditor a legal settlement letter at this point for a portion of the amount being claimed now.
