Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

If a family member has debt on a credit card, and a family member has been named executor of their estate, are they responsible for that debt or any other debt out of their pocket?

The executor would be responsible only after the person has died, and then only responsible with the assets left in the estate, but not from the executor's personal assets.
