Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California
My father's debt
I am not on speaking terms with my father, and he may die soon from lung and mouth cancer. He has not paid taxes in about 20 years. Since I am his only daughter, do I have to pay for his debt when he is dead? Is there any way I can disown myself from him?

Re: My father's debt
As a descendant of the first degree, you are liable for essential medical services which are furnished you father, but not paid for. It is true, however, that the medical service providers often do not go after estanged children. Other debts are not your obligation. They are his estate's obligation. If you are his only child, your may want to protect whatever estate he leaves you, if any. And that would mean administering his estate. Which it does not seem you would be interested in doing.
