how do I file a response to a court on a collection suit

You can go to the State of California Court website and there are standard forms to be filled out. Be very carefull here as these forms are very generic and may fail to mention an affirmative defense.

A better approach would be to hire a lawyer for an hour and ask him/her to assist in preparing an answer. That way you know that your rigths are protected.
