Financial responsbility of new spouse

I am about to be married and am in financial distress with numerous actions against me. Will my new husband be liable for these debts, some are IRS related, the others credit and consumer debts. Should I file bankruptcy before the marriage to protect him or will filing after the marriage suffice. I have been told by a friend that if we file seperate tax returns he will not be liable but need to clear this up before the wedding as I would not want to put him in that position. He lives in Missouri and I will be relocating there but the debts were incurred while I was living in California
