Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Please two follow up questions to what I asked below dashed lines. I live in California. Thank you.

1. The debt collectors Suttell Hammer and White attorneys in Washington state say they are suing me on behalf of their client Discover. But is this a ruse and it is it likely they bought the debt at a discount and are trying to get a settlement payment for themselves? I need to delay/negotiate more time.

2. I have other credit cards debt that total about 60K that are also behind. If I have to do a simple bankruptcy (all credit card debt, only asset house) how much would it cost?

Thank you.

Original post: Due to health reasons I drained all my savings and I couldn't keep up payments on my credit cards. I got a letter from Suttell Hammer and White (suttellandhammer.com) saying they intend to sue me on behalf of their client Discover for $14K and to reply in 5 days.

I really am trying hard but need about 6 months to 1 year to start making payments. I live in California. Since it was unsecured credit card debt, can they place a lien on my home and force a sale?

Did they buy the debt at a discount and should I send them a debt validation letter?

1. Who knows, but it does not matter. The debt is owed and they are claiming the right to collect.

2. In this area, the average Chapter 7 fee is between $2500 and $3000 , plus the filing fee, currently $336.
