Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

fraudulent debt collection

I was employed at macys for 6 months, loss prevention became aware of items that I had discounted and merchandise I had handed off. I was asked to estimate the extent of the losses; I quoted around 3000. The loss prevention agents took the number and wrote it on a piece of paper nad gave me a payment plan. Later of course I realized the figure was a sever overstatement. What rights do I have in getting rid of this debt? Also, I was a minor at the time, and working full time against the restrictions of my work permit. Does this help?

Re: fraudulent debt collection

You gave them the number and now you want to argue that it is wrong? I guess you could argue that they have to prove the number, but you will have a hard time with that if you agreed to it.

As for being a minor, you could contact the Department of Industrial Relations for California at http://www.dlse.ca.gov/ and file a complaint, but that won't help with the debt issue.
