Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

I do freelance design work in Chicago and have not been paid for many months and they are no longer responding to my calls or emails. My contract is based out of Oakland, CA. I am owed $6,800 and that is above small claims court limit in California. Do I need to hire an Oakland lawyer to sue for the money owed? How would I go about finding one?

The small claims court limit is $7.000 for all cases and $10,000 if you file only one case a year. If you hire an attorney the fee will exceed the amount that you are due.
