Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

My friend ha been diagnosed with bi polar disorder but just before this she dumped her business abandoned her leased vehicle and threw away her contracted cell phone. She also did many other things showing a mental disorder. The leasing company and phone company are attempting to collect thousands of dollars due to breach of contract. She virtually lives on the street now as a homeless person and will have a fixed address for only a few more weeks. How does she get out of the extreme dept? Does she have any recourse as she can't pay?
